You are police officer Bob, whose aim is to apprehend a certain quota of criminals (litterbugs, speeders and the like) each day. This is done by chasing them and sounding your siren at them - in some cases they will need ramming off the road. There are also hardened criminals to catch - if you can get one of these to confess, your day's work is considered done.

The game's action is presented with an overhead view of your squad car. Car upgrades are available, to be brought from your reward money. You earn Demerits by crashing, wrongly arresting innocents, or failing to meet your quota. Too many demerits and it is game over.

Tips:

Double Fuel - On Highway 12 you will find gas pumps right next to each other. Park directly in the middle of the two pumps and the gas pumps twice as fast.

Level-Skip - In APB, if you hold down OPT 1 and OPT 2, and run into a donut (or through the Donut shop) your quota will be filled and you will be returned to the station and proceed to the next level.

Skip to Level 99 - When your quota is met, hold down OPT 1 and OPT 2 when you touch the Officer Bob parking space. This will warp you to level 99. (The game will not end, just repeat level 99 with random quotas).

Awesome Golf is as the name suggests, a golf simulator. There are 3 courses to play one in the U.K one in the U.S and the third one in Japan. The gameplay involves you lining up your shot via an overhead view which when set up switches to a third person view. Whilst in this view you need to swing the club and stop it at the desired power and then stop it on the correct symbol to get the perfect hit. If you don't get it right you will either miss the ball or hit the earth. There are 14 clubs at your disposal, 8 irons, 3 woods 2 wedges and a putter which are selected by moving the hand cursor over you Golf bag and selecting the desired club.

Tips:

Hole in One - Entering LANDLORD as your name at the beginning of the game. Use the OPTION 2 button to swing at the ball. Hitting OPTION 2 while the ball is in the air, will sink the ball!

In a desperate attempt to stop inner-city gang wars, the city leaders organized a basketball league. The league is scheduled to play on three courts: a street, a junkyard, and a rooftop. The mayor figured that a friendly game of hoops would be a much more peaceful way to settle disputes. He was wrong.

You can choose 1-on-1 or 2-on-2 game modes. There are six characters to choose from (ten in Atari Lynx version); each with their own health, speed, and power attributes. Each player without the ball can jump to block a shot or punch there opponent to get the ball. There's also an option to perform a power throw on an opposing player. Players with the ball can shoot or pass. Power ups appear on the court at random instances. These power up one attribute for the player. For example, the lightning power up increases the player's speed.

The referee does not call fouls, but does hurl knives at the players.

Atari themselves adapted the 1992 superhero sequel Batman Returns for their Lynx handheld as a side-scrolling beat'em'up.

Batman must move through four levels on his quest to stop the Penguin and Catwoman. Enemies trying to stop him include circus clowns on the streets, policemen (whom Catwoman put on his trail) on the roofs of Gotham City, and penguin commandos in the sewers and the Penguin's lair. Batman can beat them up with his fists or destroy them using Batarangs and acid vials (which must be collected first). Several of the levels end in boss encounters with the two main villains, while in the last level, Batman must also save industrialist Max Shreck from the Penguin's wrath before finishing him off.

Hints:

Increased Life and Batarangs - When you come to a large red box with a bow on level one, stand on top and move to the right edge of it. Motorcycles will bust out of the box on the right hand side. Once this happens, jump down and walk inside the box. At this point, you will receive ten more Batarangs and you life line will increase.

Invincibility - You can make Batman invincible with the following steps at the title screen (the one with the Batlogo): press up 8 times, down 12 times, left 15 times, right 19 times and option 1 27 times, press A or B to start the game. Once the action starts, press pause. Then use option 1 to skip to the next level, option 2 to make Batman invincible! Falling can still kill you, however.

Tactics

Tactics for the first level:

1. Most IMPORTANT is keep moving. Don't sit still in one place or you will be pounded. DO NOT use your baterangs or acid vials in the first stage when you fight the clowns, goons, machine gun weirdos, etc. They can be destroyed by either jumping over them (which I do) and/or punching them. THIS is most important. When you reach the duck, you should have 70 batarangs and I think 13 acid vials.

2. To defeat the duck, stand on the top ledge and TIME your shots. This is most important. Do NOT jump off or down the ledge you are on otherwise the penguins bombs will hit you and take off a lot of life. The most important thing to defeat the duck is watching the ducks pattern and timing your shots. When I defeat the duck, I usually have 30-35 batarangs left. You do not need to use you acid vials.

3. After you defeat the duck, walk to the right and get your life vial.

4. side note: You have a much better punching range when you duck down and punch.

Tactics for the second level:

The idea here is to keep moving , but be very cautious. Your worst enemy is the shotgun cops. Because their bullets will make you fall to your death if the bullets hit you while jumping.

1. Grab all power ups ( you will need all of them espec. the batarnags and life)

2. When you are about to jump from a ledge, fire a batarang to the right. If you hear someone dying, fire another. This will stop the shotgun cops from blowing you out of the air. Note that this must be done quickly. If you stand in one place to long, another shot gun cop will come from behind you. Don't worry about the normal police shooting you. Their bullets don't take off much.

3. Don't shoot like a wild man. DONT shoot at every goon either. Shoot the shotgun cops. You can punch or jump obver the rest. However, if you are about to jump off a ledge, then shoot the bad guys to the left or right of you.

4. Beware the yellow crates on the ground for they explode. WHat you do is jump on one and then jump to safety. In about 2 seconds it will explode.

5. When you fight catwoman, you will need at least 30 batarangs and 10 vials. Again timing is important. What you should do is jump a lot as this will not let her whip hit you. All the way to the right, you will find a life power up. Get it if you are low in health.

Tactics for the fourth level:

1. Your first order of business should be to avoid the penguin and head for the power generator at the end of the stage. You must duck and punch the little box on the ground (the one with the lightning bolt on it) until the generator blows up; this will stop the cage from lowering the Ice Princess into the murky depths.

2. The Penguin will slide and attack you while you're doing this, but you should shrug him off by jumping over him and hitting him with a Batarang or acid vial to send him momentarily into the pool. The Penguin will not die until you've destroyed the power generator, so don't waste too much time attacking him at first. Once the generator explodes, send him a few well-placed acid vials or Batarangs and you'll advance to the game's disappointing ending sequence.

In this game you play the role of a tank commander who is fighting in a future war in the 21st century. The game is an update on the classic arcade game Battlezone and stays true to the original in terms of gameplay. The gameplay involves you driving round a landscape destroying enemy tanks and U.F.O.s whilst trying not to run out of fuel and also not getting destroyed yourself though luckily there are fuel pick-ups and power-ups to collect. You can also use the credits earned for completing missions to upgrade your tank. There are also a few different tanks to choose from including the Rhino which is heavily armoured but runs out of fuel faster than the other tanks.

Hidden Game:

Instructions for Battlezone 2000 Easter Egg

When you're on the tank configuration screen (the one with the red flashing bars), press OPTION1 three times and then press restart. This enables a COMPLETE HIDDEN GAME WITH 2000 LEVELS AND SOLID 3D!! Battle Zone 2000 was a very deep, large game but Atari testers thought it too hard. So we were going to throw away the whole solid 3D section. Instead, we've hidden it. This must be one of the biggest easter eggs in history.

This is best done right when turning the unit on... if it didn't work, turn it off and try again. Starting multi-player is NOT easy to acheive in this mode.

Start Screen:

Show map of world -- 50 x 40 = 2000 levels

Map coordinates displayed below map

Also Shown:

 - Terrain type
 - Tanks to destroy
 - Fuel canisters
 - Other canisters
 - Radiation level

Use joypad L/R, U/D to select - map wraps from high numbers back to 0

B button - fires razer (if installed)

Pause - pauses game

Select Mode:

Option 2

- selects things on control panel or in view

- use A with cursor on location to place in tank

- or Option 2 with cursor on view to drop it again

Move Mode:

Up - accelerates forward, deccelerates if in reverse
Down - accelerates reverse, deccelerates if moving forward

Levels and Passwords:
---------------------
Here is a level password -- how to find these is still a mystery to me

1 1 SEVE-N

This is a locked level without a password as far as I know.

27 39 ---???---

This cute saying was found in the game -- what it means is you can reset the game (Option 1 & Pause) and still keep all your items and score.

You are Travis, a scientist doing experiments with dense matter for the creation of artificial black holes for interstellar travel. While testing a piece of equipment, you are transported into a bubble world. Fortunately, a friendly denizen decides to help you. You must locate the correct type of radioactive particles to move from world to world and finally home, before the hostile denizens of these worlds burst your bubble.

You move your bubble by pushing in the desired direction. Be advised that you do not stop easily and can bounce out of control if you are not careful. Pushing the A button fires a bubble shot that will ricochet around. You can use this action to bounce shots at enemies that are around a corner. Pressing B drops a bubble bomb straight down. Pressing Option 1 switches options on the screen, including the suicidal "Burst!!!", that are then activated by pressing Option 2. The one you will use most is "Use scanner". This will bring up the scanner that looks like a radar screen and will show you the approximate location of your needed particles. Once you locate and gather all the particles needed in the level, you move on to the next level. After you finish five levels, you win the game.

California Games was the original "Extreme Games" -- what today's generation might call "X-Games in the sun". Compete in events such as skateboarding, footbag, surfing, roller skating, flying disc (frisbee) and BMX. Some events are ranked by judges (Surfing), which gives you a score to help you improve your routine.

The Lynx version of the game omits the flying disc and roller skating events, but adds a 2-player gaming mode via comlynx.

Tips:

BMX Tips
BMX: If you stay just a little (about one pixel) above the place where the grass meets the dirt there won't be anything in your way (Like those pesky bales of hay). You can crash the game by hitting the bale of hay on the bottom of the track just before the finish line. The game will freeze and the only thing you can do it turn it off. Tiny tid-bit: If you're going _really_ fast when you cross the finish line and jump just a little after crossing it, you will end up crashing into something you can't see way to the right.

Footbag Tips
If you spin right after jumping, you spin faster than normal. Thus, jump and hit the bag with your head, then spin away... Also-- in the manual under Foot Bag it says: "Score an extra 50 points for hitting the seagull in the beak with the foot bag (but only in this game -- be kind to the birdies in the other events)."

Half-Pipe Tips
Hitting Option 2 while skating will show off the Lynx's awesome scaling capabilities.

Network Four Players
Although the manual says it's two player, up to 4 can be Comlynxed. It may take a few tries, but keep at it. (It's also a bit slow, but hey, it wasn't meant for 4 players.. :)

Surfing Tips
In the surfing game, you can ride the pelican. Run your last man into the bottom of the screen a few seconds before the timer runs out. The bird will fly across the screen until the timer runs out and you'll land on it! It's possible to do an UNREAL 360 (5 360's) for 1200 points (As opposed to 600 for a Quadruple 360)

Trivia:

While the rollerskating event was taken out of the Lynx version of the game, you can still see the rollerskating girl skate by during the high-score screen.

Crystal Mines II is an update of the gameplay in its predecessor; in a nutshell, overhead puzzle-solving best described as Chip's Challenge meets Boulder Dash, with a touch of real-time elements thrown in.

In Crystal Mines II, you operate a robot going through the abandoned crystal mines, picking up crystals and avoiding the underground demons that inhabit the mine. Mine levels are completed when a crystal quota is reached, however the quota is usually not the entire level so bonus points can be obtained by finding additional crystals. Like Boulder Dash, gravity is a factor and affects any boulders, crystals, etc. so they can be used as weapons against demons. There are also deceptive elements, such as "Dormant" demons that look like boulders, that add to the challenge. Finally, the robot has weapons that can be used to eliminate certain obstacles.

Hints:

Level Skip - Enter the password KIMI but don't press the A button to start the game. Instead hold down Option 1 and Option 2 buttons and press B. You will hear a sound like a machine gun and you'll see the first level (Down in the Dirt) appear on the screen. Press A to skip ahead to the next level or press B to move back through the list. When you see the level you want to play, press any direction on the control pad to start the game.

Your job in this action puzzler is to help prehistoric man to evolve by helping them discover tools, the wheel, weapons, or even fire. Each level in the game will have a given task to help in this, and you are allotted a number of characters who must accomplish the task. The player can switch from person to person while moving the characters around each scrolling puzzle, and teamwork is essential to success.

Tasks can include finding objects (like a spear) on the screen, or trying to reach a specific destination which may require the use of objects you have discovered so far. Each level has a time limit, when time runs out the level can be restarted.

Hints:

Level codes are only revealed for every four levels completed.

In this game you play the role of Dirty Larry, an obvious pastiche of the no nonsense cop Dirty Harry of the movie of the same name, played by Clint Eastwood. The game starts of with the police chief giving you a harsh talking. You are ordered to bring in Mr Snuff, a high ranking goon in the criminal gang run by the Kingpin. The gameplay offers side-scrolling gameplay through the various streets, beating up the numerous thugs that try to attack you. Luckily Larry is armed with his trusty .45, though ammo is limited so it is best to use your fists when possible. There are pick-ups to collect which will replenish some of you health or give you ammo for your gun. Sometimes, weapons such as hand grenades or a machine gun can be found as well. You only have one life and once you die you have to start from the beginning again.

Today, if a daughter of the President goes missing, I would look in the nearest bar. However, in the near future, the explanation is that she's been kidnapped by a Criminal Brain robot, and held in a booby-trapped lair. As the advanced hybrid Electrocop, your task is to rescue her within an hour.

Gameplay involves working your way through the complex warehouse maze, unlocking coded door along the way. Extra weapons can be collected to help dealing with the drones. There are also computer terminals to buy new weapons - these also have simple subgames built in. What makes the game unique, and intended as a showpiece for the Lynx hardware, is that full 3D is used, so that the character walks in and out of the screen as well as across it.

Hints:

Crash the Game - To crash the game go to either level 5 or 9 and get as many programs hacking the door codes as possible. It may be best to set the code to the one over the actual code (See above) so the program won't find the code too soon.

Level Select - Turn off your sound at title screen, now hold up and left on the joypad and keep tapping both A & B buttons until it says "LEVEL 1" instead of "NOW TELEPORING TO LEVEL 1". Use joypad to choose level.

Door Codes

Level  1  D1 = 2473 -> Level 2       Level  7  D1 = 6021 -> Level 4

Gates of Zendocon is a side-scrolling shooter very similar to the original arcade shooter of this type, Scramble. Unlike Scramble, there are 51 game areas in total, but the player fights through a subset of them through branches, choosing the next area to visit.

Some aliens will join you when shot (power-ups). Alien bases in each area allow you to repair your weapons and shield, but landing at the wrong time will cause your ship to explode and lose all power-ups.

Hard Drivin' is a 3D arcade hit from Atari Games. You are in control of a high-performance sports car. Your objective is to race around the course as fast as possible and hit as many checkpoints as possible. If you hit a checkpoint you gain extra time to go farther. You will see traffic on the road both in your direction and coming down the opposite direction, so be careful when you pass...

The course has two sections: speed track, and stunt track. Speed track is longer, but you can usually achieve higher speeds. Stunt track requires you to perform several stunts such as jumping bridges, driving through a loop, and so on.

Crashing the car has no serious consequences and indeed shows a replay of your crash from a cinematic angle. Admire your crash head-on into the cement truck, or clipping the minivan, or flying off the bridge in the wrong angle... You lose several seconds as your car is "reset" and you get up to speed again.

The home conversions retain most of the then-advanced 3D graphics but lack the force-feedback that was in the arcade version.

Trivia:

In 2007, Midway holds the rights to this game, a lucrative deal as it includes a series of patents to the concept of recorded "ghosts" in racing games. These are recordings of a certain racing session, shown in a new game allowing players to race against and compare their best times. New games that want to use this feature have to license it from Midway: #5,577,913, a "System and Method for Driver Training With Multiple Driver Competition".

This game, as the name suggests, is a hockey simulation which is very similar to Mario Lemieux Hockey. There are 22 teams to choose from which are based on the NHL 91 line up though they can be changed if the player wishes. You control 1 player at a time and the CPU controls the rest of your team though you can switch to a different player at any time if the need arises. There is also a fight penalty system where you have to continually punch the an opponent in order to proceed. The game is viewed from an isometric perspective as if you were sat in one of the crowd seats.

Hints:

Play with the Perfect Team - Enter the password "BATSXPEB". The "X" will turn into a heart and then pressing "OK" brings up a Bat cartoon with the lines

YES SIR.
NO SIR.
THREE BAGS
FULL SIR.

Then when you go to the play game screen, you can choose a new team from Group D: "The Bats", which has *perfect* stats! Two notes: if you try to re-enter the password BATSXPEB then you get a still pic of a bat (sleeping?) with the message

BORING.

Also, the Bats are an American team, since the anthem played for them is the US National Anthem. (There is also some color change of the LA Kings uniform, possible others... but I am not familiar enough with these teams to know... we don't see much Hockey down here in New Orleans...).

There are ways to play that can dramatically increase the score, which makes the game very strategic in nature. Additionally, when desired, the player can get an oracle reading by asking a question...the question is answered when the player makes a very elegant play (4 way match).

Joust was a popular arcade game that was created and released by Williams Electronics in 1982.

In the game, players take control of a knight with a lance who rides their flying ostrich (or stork, for Player 2) to do battle against computer-controlled evil knights who ride atop vultures. Players must flap their steed's wings to hit the enemy from a higher jousting point to destroy the vulture and its rider. Once the enemy has been hit, an egg falls to one of the platforms below. The heroic knights must destroy the eggs before they hatch and release new and increasingly more difficult knights. The three strengths of enemy knights are Bounder (red knight), Hunter (white knight) and Shadow Lord (blue knight)

These enemy knights are not the only challenge to be found in the game. Players must also contend with crumbling platforms, lava trolls who attempt to pull knights into the firey, and the dreaded "unbeatable"(?) pterodactyl.

Joust was novel for its time for being one of the few two-player simultaneous games in the arcade.

In 1982, Midway and Namco created a sequel to the incredibly popular Pac-Man in the form of his girlfriend, Ms. Pac-Man. This sequel continued on the "eat the dots/avoid the ghosts" gameplay of the original game, but added new features to keep the title fresh.

Like her boyfriend, Ms. Pac-Man attempts to clear four various and challenging mazes filled with dots and ever-moving bouncing fruit while avoiding Inky, Blinky, Pinky and Sue, each with their own personalities and tactics. One touch from any of these ghosts means a loss of life for Ms. Pac-Man.

Ms. Pac-Man can turn the tables on her pursuers by eating one of the four Energizers located within the maze. During this time, the ghosts turn blue, and Ms. Pac-Man can eat them for bonus points (ranging from 200, 400, 800 and 1600, progressively). The Energizer power only lasts for a limited amount of time, as the ghost's eyes float back to their center box, and regenerate to chase after Ms. Pac-Man again.

Survive a few rounds of gameplay, and the player will be treated to humorous intermissions showing the growing romantic relationship between Pac-Man and Ms. Pac-Man, leading all the way up to the arrival of "Junior".

Hints:

Five Extra Lives - To get 5 extra guys, PAUSE, OPT1, B,lives B, A, A, OPT1, UNPAUSE (Thanks to Steve Ryno of Atari for this one) Both of these should be used while the game is in progress. The lightning bolt can be used as many times as you like, but you can only use the Extra man trick once.

AHHH, guht, ughh, moan... Wow!!! NFL Football for the Atari Lynx sure is lifelike. Right down to the referee coming on and screaming "Touchdown"... err, or was that "Interception." NFL is loads of fun, and will keep any sports fan busy for some time. The fun factor in this title is near the top of all games for the Lynx. Holding the Lynx sideways for play takes a few hours to get used to, but really is no big deal. With lots of options to choose from in both teams and plays, it is no wonder this title got the exclusive NFL seal of approval. Definitely a game worth picking up out there, Lynx owners.

Ninja Gaiden begins with a cinematic animation in which 2 ninjas duel to the death; one goes down. It is revealed that the doomed ninja is the father of Ryu Hayabusa. When Ryu learns of this, he embarks on a quest to find out who killed his father and why. This quest takes him to America to find an archaeologist with whom Ryu's father was working. From there, Ryu becomes embroiled in an evil, supernatural conspiracy involving a villain named Jaquio who has plans to use an ancient castle and some relics to unleash a terrifying evil upon the world.

Ninja Gaiden is a side scrolling game where Ryu the ninja can run, jump, and slash with his ninja sword. He can also attach to any vertical surface. Powerups are littered throughout the landscape that allow Ryu to toss fireballs and ninja stars, and perform other feats.

Ryu will battle through urban city settings, forests, jungles, snow covered castles, underground railroads, and ancient castles. A major feature in Ninja Gaiden are the cinematic scenes -- sometimes fullscreen -- through which the storyline unfolds.

Pac-Land is a side-scrolling 1-2 player game with a cartoony feel to it. Now equipped with arms, face, and legs, Pac must guide a fairy back to her home in Fairy Land, but this task will not be easy because Inky, Blinky, Pinky, Clyde, and Sue will pursue Pac-Man as he travels through Pac-Land. When he finally transports the fairy back to her home, Pac is given some magic shoes, which will help him get to his own home, where he will be greeted by his family: Ms. Pac-Man, Baby Pac-Man, Chomp Chomp, and Sourpuss.

There are sixteen rounds to complete, with four trips each. During each round, he can grab a power pellet, which cause ghosts to turn blue, allowing Pac-Man to eat them for points. Points are also awarded by collecting fruit that appear, like cherries and strawberries. In some rounds, Pac must use a springboard to jump over a lake. He must also make it to the end of each round before time runs out, otherwise a ghost will chase him.

In this game, you guide a marker which must draw rectangles and other weird objects in order to claim your territory, and you can either draw these rectangles fast or slow. Drawing the rectangles using the "slow" method awards you the most points. Once a rectangle has been made, it will be colored in to show that you have claimed your territory. While drawing the rectangles, you need to watch out for Qix (pronounced "kicks"), a series of colored lines that crawl the screen. In addition to Qix, you also need to avoid the Sparks who travel around the border, as well as any lines that you have made, as well as The Fuse, who travels along the line that you are drawing. Once you have claimed enough territory, you proceed to the next level.

A pilot must take control of the experimental fighter to destroy the alien warships that just happen to look like odd variations of typical military tanks and planes with gadgets attached to them.

Raiden (called Raiden Trad on the Genesis and SNES) is an over-head vertical-scrolling shooter, based on an arcade game of the same title. It features two forms of weapon upgrades and two types of missiles (normal or homing). George, Lizzy and Ralph were just ordinary Americans, until an experiment went wrong, turning them into a Gorilla, Lizard and Werewolf respectively. Following this, the three of them plan to go round destroying buildings, and up to 3 human players can join in.

Smashing at the edges of the buildings for long enough will make them collapse. The police and military are after you, and will shoot at you, so try to destroy them (failing that, you can avoid the bullets). You will need to eat regularly, with things like plants on offer, to avoid shrinking back to being human.

Hints:

Level Select - When the character selection screen appears, pause and unpause the game. Now when the game continues on to the headlines screen(you must, of course, select a character.) hold down option 1 and move the joypad. Now you can select ANY LEVEL!

Programmer's Picture - Activate the level select trick (Pause and unpause when choosing your monster). At the newspaper, hold down Option 1 and select Day 6. Press Pause twice. Hold down Option 1 and select Day 15. Press Pause twice. Hold down Option 1, Option 2, and the 'B' button simultaneously. Tetris meets shoot-'em-up, Rampart was originally a one or two-player arcade game combining strategy and artillery action. Build your castle from Tetris-style pieces, place your cannons, bombard the enemy, try to repair, do it all over again. Later arcade revisions incorporated 3-player, and the PC conversion does as well, making it a faithful, entertaining classic for multiple players on the same PC.

Hints:

Playing Tip - During the cannon stage, if you click five times on a place where the cannon can't be built, you'll go on ahead to the firing stage. One strategy is to place the cannon over a boat you plan to target and click five times, so that when you start the firing stage the crosshairs will already be over the boat. If it starts getting a little hairy when you try to refortify your castle (ie. to cluttered with wall remnants), then try clearing those pieces away in the next cannon stage by shooting them.

Two Player Game - Clear two veteran levels (the topmost and then the leftmost battlefield). At the Map screen, push the joypad left as if you were trying to select a different battlefield than the one remaining. The highlight will disappear. If you then start, you will be on one of the two player battle fields. You actually can choose from any of them, by continuing to move the cursor off screen. When finishing it, you can select another the same way or return to the normal mode and finish the last veterane battlefield.

RoadBlasters is a futuristic racing action game. The goal is to reach the finish line in one piece throughout each of 50 levels. Numerous enemies are out on the road to try and stop you, including armored cars, motorcycles, canons on the side of the road, landmines, and more. Your vehicle is equipped with a machine gun to help you out, and occasionally a weapons plane will fly in and drop additional power ups that can be collected. Some of these are the U.Z. canon, cruise missiles, and speed boost. Your car has a very limited amount of fuel, however more can be picked up along the way by crossing the halfway point of a level, or by collecting the red and green fuel spheres that appear in the road or after destroying certain enemies. On many levels collecting fuel is critical otherwise you won't be able to reach the finish line.

Hints:

Skip Levels

Start game normally and choose the Rookie starting area. Accelerate car, while holding down the "B" button to about 25 - 50 mph and steer the car so that it is riding on the left shoulder of the road. Keep holding down the "B" button.
Eventually, you will hit a tree which is growing on the side of the road. When you do this you will see a digitized picture of one of the programers and a short message.

You will also see in the upper right hand corner a number. This is the level you are on. Use the OPTION 1 button to move the number forward, and OPTION 2 to move the number backward. (Note: gently tap the OPTION keys. This function really zooms thru the levels.)

Once you get to the level you want to play, press the "A" button. You're now back in the game. you will now continue to finish level 1, then the next level will be the level above the one you chose, i.e. if you picked level 48, after you finish level one, you'll be on level 49.

A hero has arrived to defeat the forces of evil in the land of Argool, and you are this hero. Do you have what it takes? This game was one of the first adventures to hit the NES and the remarkable aspect on top of this was the multiple viewpoints the games offers. When you are in an action zone, the game is a side-scrolling action game; however, then you are travelling between zones, the game takes on an overhead view that can also lead to combat situations.

Hints:

Floating Shield Trick - Throw the shield in front of you, then restart the game with Option 1 and Pause. When you restart the game, your shield will be floating in front of you. As soon as you fire, your shield returns to normal. (programming glitch?)

Level 19 Playing Tip - Level 19, in which you hop from level to level with fireballs underfoot and a blueish background, is pretty hard. The simplest way to pass it is to wait for a bird to fly at you from the left, hop up as it swoops at you, then "ride" it across the screen to the right until you get past the hard parts by hopping to the right on each bounce so you stay above this one bird. For some reason the bat comes out and lets you kill it anyway on level 19. On other levels this tactic is inadvisable because the bat won't come out until you get on the rope and you can easily lose all your lives as a result.

In Scrapyard Dog you play the role of Louie, the junkyard guy, who's companion Scraps has been dognapped by the dastardly Mr. Big. Louie has bombs and cans at his disposal to use against the enemies, which include gangsters, rats, and mice. He can also use shields to protect himself on route to the sixteen checkpoints in the game. Louie must reach each checkpoint in a certain amount of time in order to save Scraps.

Hints:

Cheat

Here is a method I used to obtain lots of shields and lives in Scrapyard Dog. If a shop you are about to enter has a red $5 money bag on the same screen, take the money before entering the shop. Then exit the shop. The $5 money bag will appear again. Take the money and enter the shop again. Repeat this over and over to build up your money supply. Don't worry about losing a life or two by running out of time for the level because just ahead in another shop, you will buy yourself more lives ($35) and max out your shields ($10) to nine. This method can be used on another level towards the end of the game to get lots of lives.

Free Shield

METHOD 1:

At the start of any level, move Louie half way across the screen, then pause and press the B button. If you did this right (positioning is very important), You should see a message at the bottom of the screen that says "SHIELD AWARDED."

METHOD 2:

When the timer reads 299 press pause, then press button B (this is a more reliable method than method 1). In the beginning this always work, but not in later levels.

Warp to Arctic

You must be in the FOREST level 1. At the start of the level, move to the right to the log when the rabbit comes out. When you jump on the log over the hole where the rabbit came out, press down on the joypad. You are know small. If you go to the right, you will encounter a tree with two snakes. Enter the door to enter the shop. Exit the shop and the snakes are gone. Now jump on the stump to the right of the shop. Face left and hold down till the WARP door appears on the branch. Jump up to the door and press up. You will now warp to the ICE area.

Warp to Desert

To perform the warp, you must be on CITY Level 1. Move to the right until you get to the black cat up in the window above the mail box. Throw a can to get rid of the cat. Jump up to window where cat was and press up. You will now be small. Move back to the left to door by mail box. Jump up steps to get level with door. Hold up while in front of door to get red warp door to appear above the door. Now quickly jump onto mail box, jump to the left edge of the screen while holding the jump button (to achieve a higher jump). This will put you at the red warp door. Press/hold up in front of door to warp.

Warp to Forest

To perform the warp, you must be on JUNKYARD Level 2. Move right through the level to the stack of tires. Jump onto tires and press down. The can room will appear. The following table show where the arrow starts and where the prize ends up:

Start Finish
  1 5
  2 1
  3 4
  4 2
  5 3

You are now small in size. This allows you to knock on the WARP door and warp. As you move to the right, press up in front of the tree to get an extra life. Keep moving to the right and avoid being hit by bullets, dogs, mice, and bird dropings. Jump up where the hub caps are hanging on a line to get invincibility. Also pressing down while on top of the third brown can (the one to the left of the mouse caught between cans) will give you a shield. When you get to the toilet just before the office, jump up on the toilet. Face left and hold down. A red warp door will appear to the right of the office. Move over to the door and hold up to open door and warp.

Warp to Mountain - When small, look in the base of the tree near the second white cat. The red door will appear at the top of the screen, on a cloud, almost out of sight.

While very young, Aarbron was kidnapped and enslaved by the Priests of the Beast Lord. He grew up on drugs made to destroy his own will and turn him into the Beast Messenger, a powerful creature serving Maletoth, The Beast Lord himself. He did his job, until one day he noticed a man about to be sacrificed in a ritual, his face triggering ancient memories... and as the sacrificial knife descended into the man's body, Aarbron recognizes the face. Of his father. As his father dies in the altar, memories of his childhood and tormented past at the hands of the Beast Lord emerged, and as feelings of hate over his captors took over him, he swore revenge and fled the temple, knowing the road to avenge his father and redemption would be hard.

Shadow of the Beast, one of Psygnosis most popular titles during the 16-bit computer era is a side-scrolling platformer best known for the use of parallax scrolling along lush graphics, a musical score by David Whittaker, a iconic cover by Roger Dean and what many consider to be unforgiving gameplay, balancing between the "very challenging" and the "impossible". The player has to navigate through several areas filled with enemies and traps, collecting keys and activating triggers than open new areas or give Aarbron the means to overcome a sub-boss. The number of moves the player has at disposal is limited: duck, jump and only two attacks: punch and a flying kick. While most enemies die with just one hit, the player must time each attack accurately. However, there are also traps of objects that cannot be destroyed, and these require the player to jump, duck or move according the sequence.

The player has only one life with 12 hit points that can be replenished by collecting some objects hidden in the level (like an off-route location or a under a megalith), which also contributes to the difficulty level.

Shanghai is a tile-based game based on the ancient Chinese game of Mah-Jong - this was the first of many computer versions.

The gameplay involves 144 tiles, each depicting different images, which have to be removed by matching them into pairs. The tiles are arranged in a gridded pattern, which is higher near the centre. A tile can only be removed if it has no tile next to it on at least one side.

This computer implementation can generate a random board layout to take on, as well as featuring 5 preset challenges, some of which have time limits of 5 or 10 minutes, as well as a multiplayer mode.

There are 12 missions in total, each of which requires you to destroy targets in a set time limit. There are also training and head-to-head (against a CPU-controlled drone) modes.

You have a limited number of automatically-targeting missiles as well as a cannon. A tracking map tells you where you are on the level, and where the enemies are.Contact with the ground, mountains or other vehicles will damage or destroy your helicopter.

Based on the 1989 Atari Games (not to be confused with Atari Corporation, producers of the Lynx) coin-op by Ed Rotberg. It's 2492 and you must pilot your Sub-Terranean Underground Network (S.T.U.N.) craft at speeds over 900 miles per hour through a series of courses to retain your title as S.T.U.N. Runner, completing each course before time runs out.

There are also enemies on each course, such as cycles, indestructible armored drones, and flying bird-like craft. Shoot or avoid them. If you hit them, you lose one of your shields (your craft has six total) and are slowed down temporarily. The more shields you have at the finish line, the more bonus points you get. Getting hit with no shields does not kill you, however. There are no lives in this game. The only way to lose is to fail to cross the finish line.

Along the way you'll encounter Boost Pads that temporarily speed you up to incredible speeds and make you indestructible. By running over enough green stars on each course, you can also earn Shockwaves, which destroy all enemies in your path.

Note that there is no accelerator in this game. Your craft always goes full speed, unless you hit something. Then you will slow down, but quickly accelerate back to full speed. Other than that, you cannot slow down and the only way to speed up is to run over a Boost Pad. Your only controls are steering left and right and aiming the gun on top of your craft up and down.

Hints:

Warp to Level 18

Start out at level 11 (Labyrinth) and complete it. On level 12 (Coathanger) go right and catch the boost and continue going right. You will fly up and then continue and cross the finish line. You will be warped to level 18!

Trivia:

The Lynx port of STUN Runner was so faithful to the arcade that all digitized sound that was present in the coin-op arcade game was included in the Lynx version. However, this results in one sample with the wrong instructions: The first time a player gets a Shockwave, a voice says, "Press start button to fire shockwave." The Lynx doesn't have a start button (you press the B button instead), so this is initially confusing.

Two classic Atari arcade games were updated for this compilation. This Lynx version of Asteroids and Missile Command contains some enhanced features to justify the "super" in the title.

Super Asteroids has all new graphics to replace the vector outlines of the original. Your ship has a shield that can absorb several collisions before it blows up. There are also power ups to increase your firepower.

Super Missile Command also has all new graphics. Between rounds, you can trade credits earned during gameplay to purchase special weapons that will help you later in the game.

Super Skweek is a game inspired by the wide success of Chip's Challenge, and share some elements of that puzzler while combining other elements from games such as Pengo.

In Super Skweek, you play the title character who must walk around and either paint all the tiles of the game board pink, complete a specific mission, or both. Some tiles react in various ways when you walk on them, like exploding.

Unlike Chip's Challenge, the game plays in realtime and you can pick up and use weapons to keep away certain monsters as you paint the tiles. There is also a shop you can enter to purchase items. Finally, levels have a time limit for completion.

Hints:

Extra Men and Cash

Choose Normal Game from the options. At the map screen position Skweek (or Skruch) over the "O" in the word GARGOUIL LAND and scale until you can't fly any lower. You will see a snorkeling furball. It may take some positioning, but maneuver yourself over the furball and then press OPT 1 so you can go to the forbidden islands. If you want two extra men, scale onto the small island directly to the right of the WELCOME ISLAND in the upper right corner of the dark blue spot. You will see a Skweek next to a palm tree. Hover over it and push OPT 1 for two extra lives. To gain 3000 extra coins, scale over to the large body of water in the PAGALAGOS ISLAND. You will see a Skweek. Hover over it, push OPT 1 and the cash is yours.

As Hiro, you must once again defeat the ninja lord Havok. Using ninja throwing stars and other weapons, you must defeat the minions of Havok to reach him.

Switchblade II is a side-scrolling platform action game. One key aspect of the game is obtaining coins from defeated enemies, which can be traded at shops for extra lives, energy, and weapons.

Hints:

Cheats, Cheats, Cheats!

At the Switchblade II title screen, quickly rotate the directional pad in a clockwise motion starting with the Up position. If you go around several times, you'll see a white flash in the background. After the first flash, press Up repeatedly until the flashing stops; you should see a total of four flashes.

The first flash activates a stage-skip option, which you can use at any time during the game: Just press Pause, then hit B to warp to the beginning of the next stage. The second flash gives you infinite energy, the third flash grants unlimited ammo and the fourth flash gives you unlimited credits in the weapon shops!

While flying your spaceship, you crash land on a planet covered entirely in slime. You and a friend explore the labyrinthine planet of slime, armed with a water pistol and all manner of gadgets you find along the way in an effort to find your way back out. The game world is a giant maze with quirky hidden areas and plenty of original layout ideas. Depending on the game mode, you are either cooperating or competing with your "friend" to find and get to an exit first. Due to the massive sizes of the slime worlds (about 6 entries to choose from), games often take several hours to complete.

The basis of the game is exploration, with varying game modes further focusing on competition, puzzle solving, speed, exploration, or cooperation.

Hints:

Hidden Passageways

When you reach the first exit of what appears to be the end of the Adventure 6: Arcade, shoot your gun into the upper right hand corner of the wall. A part of the wall will disappear revealing the secret passage way. If you can't continue on, then try shooting at the wall some more.

When ever you find an exit in this level don't be fooled, it isn't the end of the game. There is always (except for the last exit #6) another hidden passage to the right of it! When you are in this secret area of the game you find a message (only readable from the map screen) alluding to the zip popping contest.

Invincibility - At the title screen with the Slime World logo that falls with a crash, do the following:

Press and hold Option 2. Press and hold Option 1 while holding Option 2 down.

Move the joypad to the upper right, while holding down both Options.

After that, release your fingers, and if desired, turn the music back on. There is no indicator of your success, until you start playing. Things behave very strangely in multiplayer mode tho, so be warned!

Zit Popping Contest

A 'Zit Popping' game can be played by going to the summary screens and then going to the screen where Todd is pictured green. Press Option 1 and you'll see a zit. Blow it up by hitting the buttons as fast as you can. This also works in multi-player mode where it becomes a competition against your opponent.

Playing Tips

You can jump out of sticky slime by jumping and pressing shoot at the same time. (I believe Wade discovered this, and it made starting out in combat a lot different)

You can climb up slippery walls by timing jumps perfectly so that you jump at the instant you touch the wall. Pressing the button as fast as you can works to a lesser extent.(I don't remember but I'll give this one to Wade as well)

If you make two megabombs explode in different rooms at the same time you can create a constantly lit mega-bomb room which will stay lit until some poor fool walks into it. (You can also do this using a jet pack but it becomes somewhat more difficult. I think the easiest place to do this is probably in J-room in level five combat. I think we all discovered this one together.)

Somewhere near the end of level 5 logic, there is a wall that you can walk into, and all the lights from the room around you will go out. It's not that great of a trick but I remember having fun with it.

It's possible to jump into almost any vertical wall and hide by moving as close to the wall as possible without grabbing on to it, and then jumping towards the wall pressing jump and shoot at the same time. It takes a lot of practice but the rewards are great. It is deliciously fun to hide in a wall where no one can see you, and then open fire on the first poor soul to walk in front of you. The place where it comes in handy is at the bottom left of the combat maze (right next to J-room) Sometimes you get stuck in that room when someone before you took both jet packs. Usually you would have to pop, but if you jump through the wall on the right, you can set up for a good position for a sneak attack. BE VERY CAREFUL though, if you don't jump and press towards the wall at the exact same time, it is possible to become forever imbedded in the wall. In combat with five lives left this can really suck. Just remember jump, shoot, and towards the wall all at the same time. (I think Ryan discovered this)

After you get the above technique down, try going to the lower right corner of combat (that big curved dead end next to the big room) if you jump into the wall on the right, you can jump right through and end up in level 5 logic. We suspected that all the mazes might somehow be connected but never took the time to find out.

It is a platform game with a lot of various levels: jungle, underwater, volcanic caves, on the ice... Toki's only weapons are spitting on the enemies or jumping on them and crashing them. There are many possibilities to upgrade his spitting "weapon"; for example, if he finds an upgrade, he can spit fireballs.

It is the year 2072. The world has changed in many ways. But one thing is still the same: the citizens of the future still enjoy sports. In the city stadium, the Universal Champions are preparing to defend their title. This is the game that separates the Cyberbots from the Droids.

Hints:

Quarterback Cheat

In Tournament Cyberball there is an apparent bug in the game that can be a real cheat. This works well against another human player. I haven't tried it against the computer. I'm guessing the computer is "too smart" to fall for this cheat. Anyways, if you're fairly far up the field, you can run your quarterback all the way to the opposite end of the field, before throwing your pass. "Unrealistic" passes can be completed from the opposite end of the field. Watch out though, some computerized cyberbots will follow you all the way.

The advantage of this cheat is simple: It takes out a few of the computerized defenders, and it throws the defense player off by not allowing the defense player to see where your receivers are going. In other words, all you see on both player's lynx's is a pretty much blank screen with nothing but a quarterback and a few rushers....With enough practice, one can have little trouble blindly throwing passes like this.

Lastly, don't try this cheat on the "Real" arcade version of this game. It doesn't work. Actually it's quite amusing what happens. When you think the quarterback is going to throw a 70 + yard pass, he/she/it ends up throwing a pass that lands like 1 yard right in front of the QB. Try it if you're ahead sometime on the arcade version. Is kinda amusing...

A combat flight action/simulation with colorful graphics and pretty straight-forward gameplay.

Step inside the cockpit of a World War I plane, when there were no sophisticated weaponry, and try to gun down the enemy. Simple as that.

The graphics were faux-3D, as the planes were 2D sprites (natural, considering the release date), but the sky seemed very vast and you could fly around freely.

Hints:

Kill the Red Baron

First select unlimited damage, 200 rounds of ammo, no collisions, unlimited men if you're not good at landing, and a dueling start. Once you're in the air, fire your machine guns at the Baron. After he flies by, waste your ammunition on purpose. Next, land. While your men are trying to fix your plane, the Baron will crash trying to shoot you on the ground.

Single Player Grave Sight

For single-player Grave Sight, as soon as you die (when the roses and skulls border appears) quickly pause the game. 'A' button will change the viewpoint from plane to plane (And to the point where you died). Look around with the joypad.

Tip for New Players

When playing alone, pause the game and you can still look around with the B' button. This may help new pilots so they can pause the action, look around and plan their route.

Xenos. The very name strikes fear into every colonist's heart. A distress call is received from space stations orbiting your homeworld, then silence. A single ship escapes, piloted by a battered man who tells the tale of pods that hatch into acid-spitting Xenos.

A small band of engineers has been dispatched to combat the Xeno threat before it takes over all the space stations and, eventually, your homeworld. Assemble your band of engineers and fight the Xenos on each station, striving to either clear it or abandon it. You start out with a standard issue laser, but can pick up additiona weapons as you find them, including Phasers, Lightning Rifles, Poofer guns, and bombs.

Xenophobe was originally an arcade coin-op by Bally/Midway, released in 1987. Gameplay premise and setting is heavily inspired/influenced by the movie Aliens.

Hints & Strategy:

First the basics. I love the yellow electro gun, so all my strategy revolves around this gun. The puffer gun does more damage. I usually crawl along the ground and fire alot. I stand to kill festers and ceiling vines. Jump to move quickly.

Festers (the fellows who appear on the sides of the screen) Take these guys out by being just over half a screen away from them. Fire like crazy. You better make sure you are at least half a screen away because these really hurt! You can advance on them once they retreat and expose their hand, makes killing them easier if you do. When they throw stuff, you better be facing them and firing... Getting hit by this stuff stuns you, likely costing your life on later levels. You can kill them with the puffer gun by laying low near the edge of the screen, and standing up and firing as soon as they start to retreat. You can always ignore these guys buy crawling along the floor... but it's good to take them out as soon as you can. They produce other aliens, and create another hazard. You can often kill festers on the adjacent screen by firing very close to the edge. I used this to my advantage alot on level 22, which is almost nothing but festers.

Ceiling vines: As I mentioned earlier, make sure you don't move into them while firing. Stop, then aim up and fire.

Rollerbies (the armadillo like things that curl into a ball) Getting hit by these balled up creatures can stun you for some time, like the festers can, which means losing your life in later levels. Fire alot at them to make them roll the other way of course. Don't fire too much if there is a closed door in the way, as they'll bounce back at you at high speed. They unravel once they stop moving. I often fire once or twice at them to make them stop. They then unravel and I kill them. Or, I throw a grenade, and fire just enough to make them be near the grenade. These guys are what really threatens your life at the beginning of later levels... Don't underestimate what a mob of these can do to your game. :) One stuns you, then every alien and their brother beat up on you while you can't do anything. Then you lose your gun, and losing your gun on later levels usually means the end of your life, if not your whole game! (you usually get a laser with your new guy, which often is inadaquate).

Point blank shots often don't work on these guys for some reason, very important to remember.

Laser firing security drones: Of course you can make these stop firing at you by getting the disk and putting it in the security machine. But did you know that you can kill them? You have to fire alot, unless you have a puffer gun. Stand and fire diagonally up, fire like crazy, and don't change directions! They'll move right into your fire. The laser gun does so little damage, it is questionable if you should do this with that gun. I kill these drones on every floor I encounter them until I find the disk. Little crawling aliens: crawl and fire alot, jump if you they stick to you. On later levels, it often isn't wise to jump immediately... you might jump into a festers xray beam, and get stunned, lose your gun, your life, your game...

Snotterpillars (big hopping spitting aliens): While heading towards a new screen, if you hear that you are hitting something just before you enter the new screen, stop and keep firing until the sound stops. Then fire a lot as you enter the new screen. Firing at them usually stops the nasty spittle they throw. You should have no problems taking out mobs of these fellows by firing alot. Stop moving as soon you are hitting one, you want to hit them as far away as you can. I am pretty brave with these guys, I'll take on a big mob of them at once. Just fire very very fast. If too many get close, or are about to, move directly away and hit jump twice (or more) in a row. This one tactic is the main reason why I survive so long! Not only does it make you run away quickly, it also has the effect of dodging their spittle. Practice turning around and hopping away repeatly when there aren't aliens around.

Make sure you are moving away before jumping, otherwise you'll jump up instead of away, and then you're really If you have the puffer gun, have no fear-- if you fire fast enough, you can kill a solid wall of these guys with it. machine that spits out bombs: Each bomb does 200 damage I think, so be careful. Jump away or over bombs that get thrown near you. hit option two to fix the machine, then hit option one until you have a full load of grenades.

self destructing: often a good idea, unless you are about to finish the level. You won't get 200 bonus health, but on later levels you'll probably lose more than that. I usually self destruct 2 or maybe 3 levels.

Fire levels: I am continually switching from the fire extinguisher to the electro gun on this level. Put out the fire, run and grab your gun and clear the rooms until you hit the next fire, etc. You can push along both guns, but it's risky. Fires count as part of the alien remaining count... so don't leave the fires for last! Otherwise you'll get stuck with a fire extinguisher on your next level. If I'm cautious, I often gain more health than I lose on these levels.

level 21: This level is utter hell. Makes every other level look silly. Be paranoid with every room you enter. I can't stress enough how hard this level is. Fire as fast as you can. Good luck keeping your gun... that's the main thing actually on the later levels, keeping your gun. The beginning of 21 and other later levels is hellish, this is one place where I wouldn't feel guilty using alot of grenades. Those hordes of rollerbies are a real problem at the beginning of levels.

level 22: This level is as easy as 21 is hard. Almost nothing but festers. This level might not be so easy if you don't have an electro-gun. I always have one here.

level 23, final level: Use my technique for killing snotterpillars, especially hopping away repeatedly when mobs get close. Grenades here can take a wall of snotterpillers, what a rush. :) Keep up a wall of fire to stop their spittle. Be wary of hidden ceiling vines on the edges of the screen. Fire as fast as you can when you see the mother alien, crawl behind her while firing when you've cleared the other aliens in the room. Fire at her head once you're behind her. (diagonally up from ground) It's important to learn to survive with a laser gun until you can get something better. Be very convervative, do most of your killing from the adjacent screen. Hit things as far away as possible. Run from snotterpillars when they get inside your max range (yup, hop twice again..) use grenades if you have to. God I hate losing your gun on the later levels. Free free to mail me any questions and comments. Is the arcade game exactly the same?

Hints:

One of the best things to remember is that you have a limited supply of money which is sometimes the difference between life and death. The best item to buy in the shop is "Slow Energy Loss." This item reduces the rate at which your energy drains. At 4x, your energy drains four times slower than normal. Keep the Slow Energy Loss at four all of the time. Buying 125% energy for five coins is not worth the value of buying two and a half Slow Energy Losses. If you keep your energy ticking down slowly, you do not need to carry so much energy. Buy only the things you need, not just the things which are nice to have! This will get you through the game and allow you to survive.

Take NO Prisoners!

"It may be a dirty war a little war; maybe even a stupid war; but its their war-and they're willing to pay. pay big."

Agents in this business have never been real refined. This guy was no exception. His hair was slicked back like the wet pelt of a Yorlthian sweat weevil, and his suit was exactly what the fashion conscious zarlor was into. He could almost pass for respectable. Almost.

But I liked what I heard. coming from him, it was almost poetic I'd made the mistake of showing up on time and already had three tanks in me when he skulked in and started to whisper his proposal. Even though we knew that every ear was straining to hear our conversation, the other patrons tried not to look Interested.

Territory wars I'd done before, no problem there. Both sides were rich-mining, hydroponics, datatrade-but both were lousy fighters. Their dirty little war had been hopelessly deadlocked for years but, like most rich cultures, they were both too proud to hire outside help... professional help.

Until now.

I liked the zarlors' plan. It was clean: not all-out war; just a series of six surgical strikes at key industrial and commercial sites on Yorith, the Mendicant's home planet. The idea was to collapse their military and disrupt the economy just long enough for the zarlors to land their prefab bases and get dwellings established In the disputed areas-the fabulously mineral-rich outer planets of their star system. I was hot for a job and the deal was right: a solo job, orbital shot, completion bonus, and I could pick my own equipment.. and money. Lots of money. There was nothing to say but Yes.

As I left the bar, an Angklon sitting at the bar spat at me and hissed "zarlor Mercenary!"

And I guess that's exactly what I am.

Hints:

Full Power-Ups

To get a fully powered up ship try the following trick: At the beginning of the game select XQ49. On the third level, second boss, let him kill you once and then finish the level. At the shop buy one of these items: power shot, side shooters, back shooters, auto fire, super sheilds, or lasers. You'll have everything maxed out except mega bombs and lives, but you can use the rest of your Zarbits on 'em.

The Game of Life

ACCESSING LIFE: The game of LIFE is accessed through the character selection screen of Zarlor Mercenary. Turn on your Lynx with the Zarlor Mercenary game card inserted. Press the fire button twice to get to the character selection screen. At this point you must hold down OPTION 1 while moving the joypad as follows: Up, Down, Left, Right, Up.

At this point your screen should say LIFE and there will be a LIFEform known as a 'glider' moving across the screen diagonally. It will go off the edge of the screen and return on the bottom, eventually running into the cells forming the word LIFE and causing the chain reaction that destroys the title screen.

Before the title screen is destroyed you may try the following controls:

1. Moving the joypad or pressing either OPTION button or PAUSE will stop the current evolution of LIFE.

2. Pressing OPTION 1 to continue the evolution puts LIFE into a mode where cells that reach the edge of the screen wrap around to the other side.

3. Pressing OPTION 2 to continue the evolution puts LIFE into a mode where cells that reach the edge of the screen behave as though they have reached a solid wall. This may be useful if 'gliders' that are launched are disrupting your LIFEforms.

4. Pressing either BUTTON A or BUTTON B puts LIFE into DRAWING MODE.

DRAWING MODE: Access DRAWING MODE by pressing BUTTON A or BUTTON B while LIFE is evolving or after the current LIFEform has reached a stable state. You can tell you are in DRAWING MODE because the joypad will be in control of your cursor, a set of green crosshairs. While in DRAWING MODE, your controls behave as follows:

1. Moving the joypad with BUTTON A depressed will allow you to draw.

2. Moving the joypad with BUTTON B depressed will allow you to erase.

3. Pressing OPTION 1 or OPTION 2 will allow your LIFEform to evolve, as described in 2 and 3 in the above ACCESSING LIFE section.

4. Note that the screen cannot be flipped, but attempting to RESTART the game will cause the screen to be cleared, and you will remain in the DRAWING MODE.

5. Pressing PAUSE and BUTTON A will put you in COPY MODE.

6. Pressing PAUSE and BUTTON B will put you in PASTE/ERASE MODE.

7. Pressing OPTION 2 and PAUSE will copy your current screen to a temporary buffer (see below).

COPY MODE: Access COPY MODE by holding down PAUSE and pressing BUTTON A while in DRAWING MODE. You can tell you are in COPY MODE because the green crosshairs will be onscreen with the word COPY in green below and slightly to the right of the crosshairs. While in COPY MODE, your controls behave as follows:

1. Pressing either OPTION 1 or 2 will return you to drawing mode.

2. Holding down PAUSE and pressing either OPTION 1 or OPTION 2 will evolve your LIFEform frame-by-frame. Note that the OPTION button used determines whether screen wrap is on or off.

3. Pressing BUTTON A sets one corner coordinate of a box that you can draw. Pressing BUTTON A again sets the other corner coordinate of the box. Anything within the box is now in your COPY BUFFER. You are now in PASTE/ERASE MODE.

4. Holding down PAUSE and pressing BUTTON A takes you to the LIFEform library, a screen full of goodies for you to put into your COPY BUFFER. After selecting a LIFEform or group of LIFEforms, you will be in PASTE/ERASE MODE.

5. In the LIFEform library, pressing PAUSE and BUTTON A again takes you to your temporary buffer (see above). You can cut items from this buffer to the main screen.

6. Holding down PAUSE and pressing BUTTON B takes you directly to PASTE/ERASE MODE, using whatever was last put in your COPY BUFFER. If you haven't yet selected anything, you may get garbage.

PASTE/ERASE MODE: Access PASTE/ERASE MODE either by holding PAUSE and pressing BUTTON B while in DRAWING MODE, or by going to COPY MODE and selecting LIFEforms from your screen or the library screen. You can tell you are in PASTE/ERASE MODE because your joypad now controls whatever you have in your COPY BUFFER. While in PASTE/ERASE MODE, your controls behave as follows:

1. Pressing either OPTION 1 or OPTION 2 will return you to DRAWING MODE.

2. Pressing BUTTON A will allow you to paste your COPY BUFFER.

3. Pressing BUTTON B will allow you to erase using your COPY BUFFER.

4. Holding PAUSE and pressing BUTTON B will flip your COPY BUFFER any one of eight possible ways.

5. Note that the screen cannot be flipped, but attempting to RESTART the game will cause the screen to be cleared, and you will remain in the PASTE/ERASE MODE.

6. Pressing PAUSE and BUTTON A will put you in COPY MODE.

At the time leading up to the 64-bit Jaguar console's introduction in November of 1993, Atari also had grand hopes of reviving its powerful color handheld Lynx system, which had drawn high praise for its graphical capabilities but was already on life support due to a paltry selection of games and stiff competition from the reigning heavyweight, Nintendo's Game Boy.

Undaunted, Rebellion stepped up to the plate and began work on a Lynx port of Aliens vs. Predator, a critically acclaimed 3D strategy/action game that helped to stir interest in the Jaguar. Because of the Lynx's advanced hardware scaling and rotation capabilities, the developer hoped to create a cutting edge rendition of the 3-D strategy adventure game for the small screen.

The version we reviewed is a demo of the game. It's quite playable but far from complete. It is, however, the most complete version of Lynx AvP that has ever been discovered. As in the Jaguar version, you can run around the Predator's ship as the either Marine or Predator, but this version was not far enough along to allow you to play as the Alien.

For those not familiar with AvP, you're set in an immense 3D environment, with a network of air vents running throughout. It's similar in appearance to many of the popular corridor shooters such as Doom. However, it's not a rapid fire blast fest with hundreds of enemies populating every square inch of real estate. Instead, it's closer in gameplay execution to Metal Gear Solid, where stealth tactics are required in order to succeed. It's also mission-based, and objectives are given before each level.

Depending on the character you select, you'll be armed with three weapons that you can select from by pulling up a status screen. The type of weapons you start with differ between the Predator and Marine. In addition, ammunition, bombs and energy power-ups are scattered throughout the ship. The status screen also lets you view an overhead map of the ship, and check on ammunition, energy, and points.

Playing Lynx AvP even for a few minutes will convince you that Rebellion had a winner in its hands. The 3D environment is fast, smooth and sharp looking. The eerie and suspenseful mood found in the Jaguar version is properly retained, and the sound effects and music are also faithful to the original. This is by no means a watered down port. Think of Jaguar AvP as a BMW M5 and the Lynx one as a BMW M3 -- smaller, yes, but just as thrilling to play with.

Alas, we will all be left to ponder what could have been. It looks about 85% complete, with only slight fine-tuning required in order for it to be a candidate for commercial release. Among the many tragedies associated with the Lynx, AvP's demise ranks right up there with the saddest of them.

In Centipede, players control a magic wand that is used to square off against a horde of nasty bugs that make their way through a mushroom patch.

The Flea falls straight down towards the player, laying fresh mushroom in its path. The Scorpion runs from side to side across the screen, turning mushrooms into poisonous toadstool, which cause the Centipede to behave irrationally and dive bomb the player. Spiders jump up and down towards the player; the closer he is, the more points are earned (300, 600, 900) . And the Centipede makes it way down the playing field. Shooting segments cause the Centepede to split off and form multiple targets.

Shooting any bug turns it into a mushroom, which can block (or speed up) the bugs on the playing field. If any of the bugs touch the wand, it's lose a life until Game Over.

Centipede was created by Ed Logg, and used a trackball in the original arcade version.

Explore an uncharted world...

What's that? You say that the Lynx never lived up to it's potential because, unlike even the piddly little original GameBoy, it lacks a RPG in its library? Well, put away that Xbox and grab your wallet, because while you're waiting for Songbird to release Distant Lands, you can buy Daemon's Gate, the best Lynx RPG this side of Bill and Ted, from B&C Computervisions. By now, most Lynx enthusiasts will be aware that Daemon's Gate is incomplete, and may be tempted to give it a pass on that basis, but Daemon's Gate is a hell of a game fragment and provides a huge world for gamers to explore. It may only be half of a game, but the portion that we do have is twice as much fun as most of the Lynx games that were given a commercial release.

Gameplay

Much of the fun provided by Daemon's Gate comes as a result of the lack of any supporting documentation that would have accompanied any normal commercial release. The plot of the Lynx version of Daemon's Gate seems to roughly parallel the version found on some other consoles -- the town names are, at least, similar -- but there are also enough differences here that it truly is a distinct title in itself and players will find themselves in truly uncharted territory.

Summary

It's doubtful that any gamer will be able to fully explore the world of Daemon's Gate, but the fun here is made in the attempt to do this. Had it been completed, the good folk at Imagitec would have given the Lynx gaming world what would seem to be a huge, sprawling (if fairly standard) RPG which would likely have ranked in the upper echelons of the Lynx's library. In my mind, though, the fragmented prototype cart of Daemon's Gate is just that much more exotic and mysterious because we just don't know much about it -- an element that really does invite exploration. You might even become the first person to explore Tan-Eldorith, or find the Sword of Venom and destroy the Daemon's Gate -- the stuff, no doubt, of the dreams of real-life explorers in our own days of old.

Hi everyone!

Lance at Video 61 has found yet another game/demo on an old Atari Corp hard drive for the Atari Lynx!

Lode Runner!

I was fortunate enough to get my hands on a copy before he starts selling to the general public, and here's what I have found:

Although Lance is going to call it an incomplete demo of the game, (so he doesn't get angry emails) I believe it to be mostly complete. The gameplay seems to be all programmed... You can climb ladders, move along ropes and dig holes for the baddies to fall in. The enemy A-I, while rudimentary (they always run directly at you) appears to be solid. I have not had the game crash, but I have not played it a lot.

It has no music, but it does have sound in-game, when you pick up the pellets, when you die, etc. When you exhaust all your lives, you get the GAME OVER screen and you can restart it with the A button.

But here's the most exciting part... I found that when you hit the PAUSE button, the game skips to the next level without a loss of life. So, I went ahead and continued to hit PAUSE to see how far it would go. I got to level 150, with (as far as I can tell) 150 different, unique levels! After that, level 151 is the same as level 1, so you can continue to play even after 150 levels! I don't know if the skill level increases... I didn't check that. I also do not know if all 150 levels are complete, playable and beatable... they look to be, but I (and Lance) make no promises. But keep in mind that if a level is incomplete/unbeatable for whatever reason, all you need to do is hit PAUSE and jump to the next level!

Although I was never much of a Lode Runner fan on the A8, I'm pleased with this new Lynx title! It's a great addition to the library.

A puzzle game where the main goal is to make loops! Random pieces are presented over a board, including simple lines and corners as well as S bends and other warped shapes, of varying sizes. It is up to the player to link them up in a loop form, then moving on to the next level. Pieces can be placed on any empty space on the grid, and rotated into one of the four main compass directions.

Any pieces which are not part of the finished loop when a level is completed are left on the screen, so there is value in playing towards 2 distinct loops, to ensure that you have options depending on which pieces are drawn - unlike Pipe Dream there are no clues as to which pieces are coming next.

Three play modes are available, two of which can be played with two players. Game A is freestyle - simply make loops, gaining extra points for size and style.

Game B is about unlocking bonus boards of the game by reaching a certain score. and uses a bonus multiplier method depending on loop difficulty.

The third mode of play begins with an already made loop and then removes random pieces of it, so the player has to put them back in when they appear again. It is essentially a memory test and logic puzzle of fitting the pieces back as one remembers - although placing a piece where it seems to fit is also often effective.

Robert:

I don't think the game was for a normal release. Some time ago there was on eBay a red colored marlboro Lynx with the game Marboro Go! So I think it was a marketing gadget/gift from Marlboro and not a game to be sold.

Albert:

Certainly this wouldn't have been a game that anyone was going to release. It's very simple, and probably didn't take a huge amount of work. It very much has the flavor of the type of game you'd write for marketing purposes. I could see this as perhaps being used at a trade show to promote Marlboro, or it could have been for some other type of marketing as you said.

I wasn't aware of the auction on eBay. I'd love to get pictures of the "Marlboro Lynx", would make a nice addition to our Lynx section (and it's an interesting piece of Lynx history). I don't suppose anyone savied a picture.

Yet another lost game that should have been released...

The Lynx library is filled with some pretty classy titles like Warbirds and S.T.U.N. Runner, and it's pretty obvious that Atari Corp. marketed the Lynx to a fairly sophisticated and upscale gaming audience. The Lynx's sports library is really no exception to this general trend, and titles like Jimmy Connors Tennis, Awesome Golf, and European Soccer Challenge all exude a certain snob attitude that proved to be more popular with critics than with the buying public. Atari did belatedly realize that many members of its target audience seemed to prefer dogfights to horse riding, and it did develop a few titles of dubious artistic merit, like Pit Fighter and the unreleased (but essentially complete) Road Riot 4WD to appeal to this exurban ethos. It's probably a good thing that sales never did meet expectations, as we might well have ended up with Lynx Foxy Boxing or Tonya Harding Mud Wrestling!.

That being said, however, Bruce Caruso and the gang at B&C Computer visions offer the modern Lynx gamer plenty of guilty pleasures with their EPROM release of Road Riot 4WD (RR). It's a well-crafted, graphically impressive game that should appeal to players who like a little technical challenge to go along with arcade action.

Gameplay

It's best to think of RR as a cross between Roadblasters and Atari Karts. The object of RR is to race your modified Formula One racer / dune buggy against three other competitors on one of eleven different dirt tracks. Cars are armed with guns, and while you won't be able to use them to blow your opponent right of the track, you can temporarily slow other cars by scoring a direct hit on them. Effective firing takes some practice because you won't often get to share the track with other cars; you'll most often see your competitors (if at all) on the side of the road after they've taken a spill themselves. Fortunately, the car's cockpit does contain a rearview mirror, so you'll be able to tell when one of your competitors is getting a bit too close for comfort.

Players must complete a preliminary qualifying round before advancing to one of the game's eleven tracks that comprise the game's "tournament circuit." The test track is actually the most difficult in the entire game, as it's often difficult there to detect the presence of road hazards. Fortunately, the Lynx doesn't play a very tough game, and you should be able to qualify for the Road Riot Tournament with relatively little difficulty.

Players who do graduate to the racing tour can challenge themselves with any one of eleven back-country tracks than span the globe. Each of the different tracks has different driving hazards, from the ice in South Pole to logs in the redwood forests of northern California. Players must "place" in order to continue racing; fortunately, two game continues enable even weak drivers to test out different courses.

Poorish controls are RR's biggest weakness, and players will have to spend an hour or two orienting themselves to the game's "feel". For instance, the gas pedal is operated with button "B", and the fire button with "A"; driving and firing is therefore often a tricky business. All of the game's cars are also inherently unstable, and they have a propensity for flipping over at will. I'm still not sure if this was a planned driving hazard or simply poor game design and execution.

RR's controls are also very sensitive, but I've found that it is possible to complete a lap without flipping over or crashing into a rock; you just have to be very careful not to turn your vehicle while jumping or negotiating any track curve. It's tricky, but the controls are still better than what you'll find on Checkered Flag for the Jaguar.

It's not currently known if RR supports multi-player capability through the comLynx cable. You'd think that RR would be great fun for friends seeking a little competitive challenge, but the game's quirky controls would likely frustrate their amusement attempts. RR really works best when your competitors aren't directly on track with you.

This is the third entry in the series of fast-paced ninja action games, and is the last game in the series to be released on the Nintendo Entertainment System.

Some time has passed since the defeat of Ashtar and the resurrected Jaquio, and Irene Lew has received a new mission to complete. She is to observe a strange factory that has been constructed recently for an unknown purpose, and investigate it. She proceeds to reconnoiter it, but is intercepted and apparently assassinated by her friend Ryu Hayabusa...except it isn't Ryu. It is an imposter. The real Ryu, angered over her death, and the subsequent false accusation that he murdered her, continues her mission and proceeds to investigate the factory.

As stated, this was the last game in the regular series produced for the NES. It had many features the previous games in the series did not, such as a power up to extend the length of your sword, a new vertical "wave" attack and vertically-scrolling levels. The US version of the game is reputed to be the hardest in the series, due to the extra damage incurred when hit, slightly shorter regular sword length, limited continues and more enemies.

The Lynx port is the second Ninja Gaiden game on the platform, the first being a port from the Arcade Version. This port is identical to the NES game, but the in-game picture is compressed for the smaller screen of the Lynx.
