The article “Hans Scholl” states “Hans was born September 22, 1918 in Ingerheim, Germany. Hans was the second child of five and Sophie was third of the five. At the begging Hans and Sophie wanted to be part of the Hitler Youth at first. Jacob Hornberger, author of the article “The White Rose: A Lesson in Dissent” writes, “Their farther, Robert Scholl, told his children that Hitler and the Nazis were leading Germany down the road of destruction”. Robert Scholl was right about what was going to happen. The article “Hans Scholl” states, that Robert Scholl was a pacifist During World War I. Later on in Robert Scholl life he will be sent to Nazi prison for telling his secretary: “The war! It is already lost. In the year 1937, Hans Scholl at the age of 19 passed his college examination. Then in 1939 Hans was finally able to enroll at the University of Munich. This was a good thing for Hans because now he lives 50 miles from his house. In 1940 Sophie went to a secondary school. Then a few years later Sophie had training as a kindergarten teacher for a year. Then Sophie applied to the University of Munich but she was refused because she was not well known so she was rejected. The White Rose began in 1942. Hans Scholl was a medical student at University of Munich, his sister, Chirstop Probest, Will Graf, and Alexander Schomonell founded the “White Rose” movement (ushmm.org). The White Rose was one of the few German groups that spoke out against Nazi genocidal police. Since they were against Nazis they were wanted for speaking against them. The White Rose was an anti-Nazi movement in Germany (Encyclopedia of World War II).The white Rose movement was led by a philosophy professor named Kurt Huber. Also when World War II began Hans got special permission to continue his studies. The group expanded into an organization of students in Hamburg, Freiburg, Berlin, and Vienna (ushmm.org). This was good because the more people the Allies had and the less the Nazis had would bring the allies closer to victory against the Nazis and Hitler. After a series of abortive plans, a serious assassinations attempt was finally made in July 1944 when it no longer took any special insight to see that Hitler’s continued rule was leading to Germany’s inevitable defeat. Hitler escaped the bomb blast with only minor injuries. Many of those who were involved in the conspiracy were killed (The World Must Know 171). Even though it was a good try to end Hitler’s regime there were more people that tried to kill Hitler dead from there own bomb the Nazis and Hitler. The White Rose used leaflet which was the first time that that internal dissent against the Nazi regime. The leaflet contains an anonymous essay that said Nazi system slowly imprisoned German people (Hornberger). This was a good way to get the German peoples attention with out getting caught from the Nazis because the leaflets were good essays that told the people what they needed to know and since they were anonymous they could not get caught by the Nazis. The other way the White Rose got the Germans peoples attention was writing in graffiti on the walls all over town. The White Rose wrote things like: “Down with Hitler!... Hitler the Mass Murder!” and “Freiheit!... Freiheit!... Freedom!... Freedom!” This is also a good way to get the German peoples attention because it is in big letters on ever wall in town and you can not miss it. Also it was still anonymous so they still will not be caught. On February 18, 1943 our heroes Hans and Sophie Scholl and there friend Christoph Probest finally got caught. Then on February 22, 1943 their arrest trail began, but their sentence for their crimes against the Nazis was death. They would be executed with the medieval device known as the guillotine. The guillotine was a nicer way to end people’s life then they would do with an axe. This was because the axe could not kill some on in one swing. The guillotine blade weighed around a hundred pounds and dropped at fast enough speeds to kill somebody in one shot. The day they were sentence to die they were not allowed to see each other but the guards were so impressed with there bravery to except defeat and death the let them see each other one last time (ushmm.org). This was very noble and nice of the Nazis to see each other one last time. Jacob Hornberger, author of the article “The White Rose: A Lesson in Dissent” writes “just before Hans was beheaded, Hans screamed out: “Long Live Freedom!” This shows the courage and guts the Scholl’s and the White Rose had. Not to long later the Scholl’s friends Alex Schmorell, Willi Graf, and Kurt Huber were exacuted.
